Do I qualify for compensation?

If you have suffered an injury due to being the victim of an unprovoked violent assault or as a result of physical, mental or sexual abuse, then you may be entitled to claim compensation for criminal injuries, from an organisation known as the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. Compensation awards are available for anyone who has suffered anything other than a trivial injury and awards start at £1000.00.

There does not have to be a conviction, nor does your attacker need to have caught for you to qualify.

In order to qualify, you must have reported the attack promptly to the police and have helped them as much as possible with their enquiries. If you have a criminal record yourself, particularly for violent offences, then this may result in your claim being disqualified or subject to a reduced award.

If you have recently suffered injury in an assault and you have not reported it to the Police, then it's important you do so immeidiately.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

This will depend upon your injuries. Awards start at £1000.00 for minor injuries like a broken nose. For very serious injuries, awards can reach up to £500,000.00. You can also claim compensation for lost wages and the care you have received from friends and family.
